ADAPTOGENS
Adaptogens are a select group of herbs (and some mushrooms) that support the body’s natural ability to deal with stress.
They are called adaptogens because of their unique ability to “adapt” their function according to the specific needs of the body which may be physical, chemical or biological.
They have special compounds that can possess opposing qualities, such as being relaxing or stimulating with the correct response being triggered according to the body’s specific needs, and by interacting with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympatho-adrenal system, both of which are involved in the body’s response to stress.
These herbs aid our bodies in reacting to or recovering from both short- and long-term physical or mental stress with some also boosting immunity and overall well-being. Research shows adaptogens can combat fatigue, enhance mental performance, ease depression and anxiety, and help you thrive.
Adaptogens may also tweak hormone production and physiological responses to stress to ensure that your body—from your mind to your immune system to your energy levels—functions optimally.
Studies and clinical trials have revealed that adaptogens exhibit neuroprotective, anti-fatigue, antidepressive, anxiolytic, nootropic and CNS stimulating activity and can increases mental work capacity against a background of stress and fatigue, particularly intolerance to mental exhaustion and enhanced attention (1)
